Believe me when I say that it was HOT, but Moshe & I still had a blast and Lisa & Nicolas were troopers!! The setting was the beautiful Belmont Conference Center in Elkridge, MD and the grounds surrounding the venue made for an incredible backdrop for this outdoor wedding. Below is a sample of some of the images that PSQuared Photographic produced for Moshe Zusman Photography. Thanks again to Moshe for bringing me along!! Enjoy!

Well.. the truth is I'm always looking for the most efficient way to get those results and keep them consistent from job to job. There are many photographers out there that still rely on Adobe Bridge and Photoshop to get the desired result, but more and more photographers in the wedding industry are switching to Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture to manage the thousands of images that they take at wedding jobs. Me?... I'm a Lightroom guy and I've been using it with great results since it was introduced. Whether you use Lightroom or Aperture, you should definitely look into either one. Of course, you must be using a Mac to use Aperture. Lightroom is available for both Mac and Windows. Both programs are super powerful and really easy to use. The trend now in the industry is to use these programs for at least 90% of your image processing and only use Photoshop for extreme image processing and image repair. For me, Lightroom enables me to process thousands of images in a fraction of the time that it used to take and the processing is dead-on accurate. I Love It!! The other thing that I'm really loving right now is the Totally Rad Lightroom Presets. I've been using Totally Rad products for years, but before they came out with the Lightroom Presets, I had to use Photoshop to use their Action set. Now, don't get me wrong, I still use and love Photoshop, but I can get the same look in less time and for many images with the Lightroom presets. It would be pretty silly for me to add time to my process if I didn't have to. The Totally Rad Presets cover everything from Awesome Black & White to Vintage Color processing. I tend to lean towards the more subtle presets, but you can get really funky with them. Below are some before and after images. All images were processed in Lightroom and the only image adjustments were made with the Totally Rad Lightroom Presets. Special Thanks goes to Moshe Zusman Photography for bringing me along to shoot second on the wedding that these images were captured at!

This is the second time that I have been able to attend a SHOWIT event in DC and I also got to spend some time with the SHOWIT folks this year at WPPI. I have to say that I am proud to be associated with such an AWESOME company and I've been associated with them since I started my company. David Jay & Crew are some of the most generous folks in the industry and the way that they take care of their customers is second to none. They listen to us and they treat their customers like family. No matter what you may hear on Twitter or other social media sites, they care so much about us photographers and they deserve every bit of praise they get. Unless you've taken the time to get to know them and do business with them, you aren't qualified to speak about them in any fashion other than a neutral one. The truth is, they are positive, inspirational, and giving. They have a higher purpose for what they do and its not always about the money. I would not have been able to get my business up and running without the help of SHOWIT and David Jay. I can also say with all confidence that I'm not the only one. For that I am deeply grateful. This is year on the tour, David brought along Promise Tangeman, Jim Davis-Hicks, and The Boudoir Divas. He also brought musician Molly Jenson for our entertainment. Too bad there were far too many "Chatty Kathy's" in the room that forgot how uncool it is to talk while someone is trying to entertain them. By the way, thats just my opinion, but I'm glad that Molly took it with a sense of humor and called em out whenever she had the chance!! Love that!! Anyhow, the event ROCKED and I was so happy to see my dear friends Moshe, Inbal, Diana, Mario, Zhia, Peter and Vithaya. It was also cool to make some new friends. Can't wait to catch up with Julie & Kristen. Below is some of the photographic evidence of the fun that was had. Enjoy!!

Any of you that know me are very aware of my addiction to all things Apple Computer. They are the coolest products out there and I have a problem.. I admit it.. But I have no plans to try and fix it. I am fully invested and I'm pretty dang proud to say it. I find it really funny when I hear people trying to bash them or tell me that they don't get what the big deal is. Are you kidding me? The truth is that the products that Apple comes out with set the bar for everyone else and everyone else is usually falls short. First, the iPod. They own the consumer music market. Why? Because the product is the best at what it does on every level. Second, the iPhone. From a design and function stand point, they have changed the smart phone market forever and have caused more manufacturers to rethink how they design their products. Now, folks love to argue about the ATT thing, but the truth is, there is no perfect carrier. They all drop calls is certain areas and we all deal with it. Nuff said! As far as the Apple computer products, they are the best designed, best functioning, best built, most user friendly computer products around. Sure, they aren't the cheapest, but who cares. Why should the best be the cheapest? You get what you pay for. You wouldn't go to a BMW dealership and ask them discount their cars and if you did, they would laugh at you. They aren't about market share as much as they are about quality.

With that in mind, here are my Top 10 reasons why Apple Computers RULE!!:

#1 cause they work with everything.. No need to load printer drivers!!

#2 cause they don't crash

#3 the iPhone.. Duh!!

#4 the iPad

#5 No viruses.. Haven't had virus protection for 4 years and I don't need it!!

#6 cause the federal govt doesn't use them.. why would anyone want to use a product that a failing system would use anyway?

#7 cause they support the creative community and they dare to be different!!

#8 cause they make my business work more efficiently

#9 cause they inspire

#10 cause they look cool!!!

So I have a question for all of you... Are you awake?..... Are you listening?... or reading?... enough of that! If you are here, then thanks for tuning in. Before you read any further, I want to let you know that alot of the content below is geared towards my fellow photographers and anyone that wants some insight into our business. As I stated in my last post about WPPI, there was ALOT of knowledge shared during that trip and one thing that was a repeating theme was the question, "What is your true worth?". What I mean by this is what is the true value of the wedding photography that we produce. Its not uncommon for clients to ask us questions like, "Why are your packages so expensive?",or "Why are your wedding albums so expensive?". While these questions are certainly valid, the way that we as business owners look at them is very important. These questions can create insecurity and stress. They can cause one to question their own worth. They have caused me to question my own worth. With that in mind, please allow me to share what I've learned. The truth is, we as photographers are capable of doing something that no other artist is capable of. We can document a perfect moment in time in the blink of an eye!! Think about it for a second... Can a painter recreate the look of love that a groom experiences when he sees his bride for the first time in a 250th of a second?.. No... Can a sketch artist document with 100% accuracy the moment that a bride and groom are pronounced man & wife?...No. So we are unique in that we are the only artist that can do this the way we do it. That in itself has value. Now don't get me wrong, I've got nothing but love for all of the painters and sketch artist out there. I couldn't do what you you do if my life depended on it. I envy your skill. Second, can anybody but you give the client... YOU?! Absolutely not... There is only one you.. and that has emmense value!

In a time that people are watching their money more than ever, the key word is value. We as a society still spend money. We just pay alot more attention to the "Value" of anything that we spend money on. That's a good thing. To me, something that maintains its value for a long time is more valuable than something that is fleeting and only provides me pleasure for a quick moment in time. As for the wedding industry, a bride & groom have alot of things that they have to spend money on for their wedding day. They have to buy a dress, rent tuxedos, order a cake, order food & drink, hire a DJ, rent a reception hall, pay for the wedding venue and hire the photographer. There are always extra's that pop up as well. Pretty overwhelming isn't it? So when you look at this list, what do you think are the only things that last past the wedding day?................... Have you thought about it? The dress and the photography. After the wedding day, the tuxedos have been returned, the food and drink have been consumed, the DJ has packed up his gear and all of the guests have gone back to their lives. The only thing that is left is the memories that were captured by the photographer and the dress. And the dress won't even be worn again for at least 20 years if the bride & groom have daughter and she wants to wear Mom's wedding dress. The only thing that can bring happiness every day for the rest of your life is the wedding album and the moments that were captured on the wedding day. Pretty darned valuable!!.. Don't you think? With all of this said, there is one thing left to keep in mind. Because of the value of what we do, we must make it a priority to produce spectacular images, provide amazing service and go the extra mile with our clients. Just because we have a camera and a little skill doesn't make us and what we do valuable. There are alot of people out there with digital cameras that can push a button and they like to call themselves a professional. That doesn't mean that they have your passion or vision. They are a commodity... you aren't. There is only one you.. Practice your craft daily, maintain your passion, deliver world class images, and exceed your client's expectations. If you concentrate on that, everyone wins!! Until next time... Be Blessed!!

WPPI 2010...Reflections

WPPI 2010!! All I can say is WOW!! What a week!! Since this was my first time attending, I had many pre-conceived notions about what it was going to be like. Some of my notions were on the mark and some were a little off. The bottom line is that I know I won't ever be the same and Thank God for that. To say that it was over whelming is an understatement. 15,000 wedding & portrait photographers keep it from being anything but over whelming. For the last 3 years I have found one reason or another to not attend WPPI; reasons like "my business isn't big enough", "I'm just the new kid on the block.. Nobody will be interested in talking to me", or "I just can't afford to this year"! Well, thanks to my friend Moshe Zusman of Moshe Zusman Wedding Photography, I took the leap this year and made it happen and I'm sooo stoked that I did. I learned more than I ever thought I could learn, I met some incredible photographers from all over the country that were actually interested in hearing about my "little" business, and I made some new friends that will most likely become life-long friends. I shared my concerns, I listened to other's concerns and together we assured each other that everything was going to be fine and we had each other's back.

The other incredible aspect of WPPI 2010 is that I got to meet and hang my favorite vendors and thank them for all that they do for my business. The incredible thing is that they were more interested in hearing about how they could help grow my business than hearing kudos about their awesome products. I also got to attend classes with Kevin Kubota, Jerry Ghionis, Doug Gordon, and John Michael Cooper. It blew me away at how humble and sharing these guys were. My mind is still running at 1000 mph with all of the information that they shared. Anyhow, to those folks that doubt whether they can justify the expense to attend next year, all I can say is that you owe it to yourself and your business to attend. All of the other conventions are cool, but none can compare to WPPI. Again, special thanks goes to my friends Moshe, Hadar & Inbal for convincing me to go and a big shout out of love goes to my new friends Angela, Zhia, Mark, Emily, Will, Vithaya & Diana. I can't wait to get together with you all soon and share our thoughts about the week. Below is some photographic evidence of the this incredible experience. Enjoy!!...

Needless to say, most of us are ready for some warm weather so we can start shooting more. I've definitely got cabin fever and I can't wait to get to Vegas in a couple of weeks for WPPI. Over the past few weeks, I've had the opportunity to see just a few good movies and one that has really had an impact on me was the movie called "Food, Inc." The movie is basically about the advantages of organic eating and I'm not gonna go all Al Gore on you about the "inconvienient truth" that is our environmental state. But, I have been trying to think more globally and how I can be more environmentally friendly in my business life. To be honest with you, I've pondered this question before, but haven't really done much about it. Lets face it, the wedding photography business is alot about luxury and thats great!! We all want to offer our clients the best and they truly deserve it. But the luxury lifestyle doesn't exactly agree with the environmentally friendly lifestyle. Now, I honestly feel that everyone is entitled to live their own life and do what they want as long as they don't harm me, but I still want to be responsible and do my part to make this a better earth for my kids.

So.. how can I do this with my business? I have a few ideas.. First, I've been basically running a 90% paperless business for a year or so. I email all info (Quotes, Contracts, Price lists, etc.) to my clients and I take notes on my iPhone's note pad and email them to myself. Then when my clients choose their package, the contract is printed signed and scanned so I can create an archival copy. The benefit?.. less paper used, less paper thrown away. Second, I offer "Green" albums to my clients as an option. Couture Book offer an album called the Earth Book that is manufactured in a totally "Green" manner. For more info on these books, click on the link above. They are very unique and they look awesome!! Of course I still offer those beautiful leather albums that I always have, but I wanted to offer a "Green" option. Finally, I've been toying around with the idea of doing away with traditional business cards and replacing them with digital business cards. Sure, there are "Green" card options, but it still leaves more junk in the trash can. My prefered method of exchanging contact info is the VCard format or using an iPhone App called "Bump". You and another person with an iPhone just bump knuckles and the info is transfered to the other persons phone and address book. Pretty cool!!

So here is the "Million Dollar Question"... How do you feel about this issue and what ideas do you have to be more "Green" as a business. I really want to hear your feedback. Please leave a comment below so others can see it and/or send me an email at paul@psquaredphotographic.com Until next time...

Happy 2010!!

Happy New Year everybody!! I know that its been a while, but things have been anything but idle. Lots of business planning has been going on for 2010 and there has been alot of workshop planning for 2010 as well. Back in the summer, PSQuared Photographic and Moshe Zusman Photography teamed up for our first workflow workshop and it went great!! Because of that response and our desire to teach and share with other photographers, PSQuared and Moshe are starting a series of workshops on photography workflow, website optimization, and business markting. There is website being designed for the workshop series and hopefully, these workshops will continue through the entire year. The next workshop is being planned for late January or early February. Then in March, PSQuared Photographic will attending our first WPPI convention in Las Vegas!! I'm so excited about this event and you can count on a report from me when I return.

So, you may ask yourself what wedding photographers do when the season is slowing down. While all of us plan for next season, work on website designs and next year's business plan, some of us get together for some photo excursions. This was the case for Moshe Zusman, Ron Jones and myself in November. Since its so cheap to go from DC to New York thanks to Megabus ($17 each way!!), we decided to take a day and head to NYC. The plan was visit the photographer's Toys R Us, B&H Photo and just hang out around the city. We had a blast and had some great food at Mesa Grill! Below is some photographic evidence of the fun we had. These images were shot with my newest equipment purchase; the Canon 1D MkIII!! This camera ROCKS!! Love to have the new MkIV, but this one will do just fine. Thank you Moshe!! Enjoy!
